DAV Chapter 70

Meeting of 10 June 2003



Commander Bill Geden called, the meeting to order at 2:05 PM.

There were 14 members present, - Sign In Sheet

Adjutant John Seaman led the members in prayer.

The Commander led the members in the Pledge of Allegience.

The Adjutant read the roll call of officers, ( see encl: 2)

The Adjutant read the minutes of the 15 May 2005 meeting.
The minutes were approved as read.

Adjutant Seaman commended Treasurer Chuck Huelsmann for assuming the duties of adjutant in his absence as well as performing his many other duties as Treasurer and Newsletter Editor.

Treasurers Report: Treasurer Chuck Huelsmann presented the Treasurers Report for the month of May 2003 as well as bills against the chapter.
Frank Bachteler made a motion to accept the treasurers report and pay all bills as noted.
The motion was seconded by Doug Robinson and approved by the membership, (see encl: 3)

Chaplains Report: There was no chaplains report due to the absence of Chaplain Wayne Stilts however Comrade Mack Armitage noted that comrade Wilfred Sheehy, Jr. was listed in this mornings obituaries.

A brief discussion was held in regards to the scholarship fund.
A committee will be formed in the Fall to establish the guidelines for the scholarship.
The goal is to offer the scholarship in the Spring of 2004.

Membership Report: John Skjefke encouraged members to attend various functions and gatherings in the community.
John also provided information on the American issued Korean War Medal.

Service Officer/Publicty: Frank Bachteler announced that he was attemping to assist one veteran and a dependent in regards to claims and records.
Frank also displayed a memorial bible.
Frank made a motion to purchase a dozen of the bibles at an approximate cost of $40.00 each.
The motion was seconded and approved.

Frank also gave a report on the DAV 5th District meeting and election of officers.
A visitation list and dates was also presented.
The Commander noted, that our visitation date was moved to November and to the third Tuesday of the month.
Frank was requested to advise the district of the change.

Communications: The Adjutant read a request for assistance from the County Veterans Service Office.
$6,000.00 was needed for a deaf student attending Boys State.
The members thought the amount was excessive and no action was taken.
The Adjutant announced a donation of $10.00 to the booster fund from Frank Bufaro.

Old Business: The Commander brought up the matter of kitchen improvements. quotes had been obtained at an earlier date but no action had been taken.
Deeb Cabinets proposal was for the amount of $8,000.00 (approx).
The members were shown a copy (drawing) of the proposal.
A motion was made to grant the Executive Board authority to proceed with the kitchen improvements and seek estimates on additional improvements and repairs.
The motion was seconded and approved by the membership.
Additional projects discussed were parking improvements, a picnic table area, air conditioning, door replacement, front awning and office space.

New Business: Adjutant Seaman proposed changing the November meeting date to the third Tuesday to avoid conflict with Veterans Week activities and District Five visitation.
A motion to approve made, seconded and approved by the membership.

The commander brief the members on a visit to Brooksville.
The general meeting was with VA Secretary Principi and Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite.
Frank Bachteler and Nancy Geden accompanied the Commander who presented Veterans Appreciation Week pins to the Secretary and Congresswoman.

The Commander also briefed the members on the State DAV Convention that he attended with Nancy (Geden).

Charles Huelsmann stated that Louis Sweatman would like the Chapter to purchase a flag for Citrus Health & Rehab.
MO Byrnes suggested getting a flag from our Congresswoman.

Charles Huelsmann requested that we approve the transfer of a DAV member to our Chapter in absentia.
The member, Edward Kimkin of Hornosassa Springs is wheelchair bound and unable to attend our meetings.
The motion was

seconded, and approved by the membership subject to verification of his qualifications.

Good of the Order: The Adjutant noted the passing of member Jean W. Richards of Hanover, Ind. on May 16, 2003.

9'Oclock services were held for are fallen comrades.

A motion to adjourn was made, seconded and approved by the membership.

MO Byrnes suggested that the Chapter combine with his VFW post for a visitation to the VA hospital.

50/50 drawing was held.
$12.00 to the general fund.
